Information gathering and conflict resolution in Polistes wasps

چکیده

The paper wasp Polistes dominulus is unique among the social insects in that nearly one-third of co-foundresses arecompletely unrelated to the dominant individual whose offspring they help to rear and yet reproductive skew is high. Theseunrelated subordinates stand to gain direct fitness through nest inheritance, raising the question of whether their behaviouris adaptively tailored towards maximizing inheritance prospects. Unusually, in this species, a wealth of theory and empiricaldata allows us to predict how unrelated subordinates should behave. Based on these predictions, here we compare helpingin subordinates that are unrelated or related to the dominant wasp across an extensive range of field-based behaviouralcontexts. We find no differences in foraging effort, defense behaviour, aggression or inheritance rank between unrelatedhelpers and their related counterparts. Our study provides no evidence, across a number of behavioural scenarios, that thebehaviour of unrelated subordinates is adaptively modified to promote direct fitness interests. Conflict over sex ratio and male production in paper wasps

Kin selection theory has been used to generate several useful frameworks in the field of evolutionary ecology. We briefly review the research on two main theoretical predictions for sex ratio variation among colonies, and for worker policing, using a relatedness framework in paper wasps. Contrary to the studies of advanced eusocial wasps, conclusive evidence showing worker control of sex ratio ...

Coevolution of visual signals and eye morphology in Polistes paper wasps.

To be effective, signals must propagate through the environment and be detected by receivers. As a result, signal form evolves in response to both the constraints imposed by the transmission environment and receiver perceptual abilities. Little work has examined the extent to which signals may act as selective forces on receiver sensory systems to improve the efficacy of communication. If recei...

Visual signals of status and rival assessment in Polistes dominulus paper wasps.

Aggressive competition is an important aspect of social interactions, but conflict can be costly. Some animals are thought to minimize the costs of conflict by using conventional signals of agonistic ability (i.e. badges of status) to assess rivals. Although putative badges have been found in a range of taxa, little research has tested whether individuals use badges to assess potential rivals b...

Prevalence of the parasite Strepsiptera in adult Polistes wasps: field collections and literature overview

The incidence of strepsipteran parasites in temperate Polistes wasps is recorded following the collection and dissection of adults from nests, foraging sites and hibernacula. The mean proportion of infected P. dominulus adults (i.e. parasite prevalence) on nests was around 7%, while wasps which were captured when hunting for prey or collecting water were rarely parasitized. Of the four Polistes...

Polistes wasps and their social parasites: an overview

Severe brood care costs have favoured the evolution of cheaters that exploit the parental services of conspecifics or even heterospecifics in both birds and social insects. In Polistes paper wasps, three species have lost worker castes and are dependent on hosts to produce their sexuals, while other species use hosts facultatively as an alternative to caring for their own brood. This paper offe...
